1776 Announces the Companies Advancing from First International Stop in its Global Competition

Today, 1776, an incubator platform located a few blocks from the White House, in partnership with Digital October, a Moscow-based center for the globally-minded technology entrepreneurship community announced the winners of Challenge Cup for the Moscow region.

Challenge Cup is a startup competition spanning 16 cities around the world and culminating in Washington, D.C. to find the world’s most promising startups tackling education, healthcare, energy, and city challenges.

Twenty-four startups competed during the evening of November 9th event. The competitors also participated in an accelerator program for the two days preceding the competition.

“Moscow was our first international regional competition and we were very impressed with the caliber of companies presenting and vying for a chance to compete in D.C. in May,” said Evan Burfield, co-founder of 1776. “The entrepreneurial ecosystem in Moscow is thriving, largely in part to centers like Digital October, and the Challenge Cup competition shed light on the wealth of solid startups addressing global challenges. We thank the startups, mentors, judges and community that came out to participate in the Challenge Cup.”

The regional winners include:

  •     Education: WESTUDY.IN, a peer-to-peer knowledge sharing platform for universities and higher education in Russia and abroad that personalizing search for higher education via crowdsourcing of peer-to-peer and expert knowledge.
  •     Energy: EcoCat, a producer of catalytic heaters/filters for decomposition of products of combustion, eliminating heat exchange and forced ventilation and thus, reducing heating costs by four times.
  •     Healthcare: Medesk, a cloud platform that aggregates medical data for integrated information flow.
  •     Smart Cities: Angry Citizen, an online and mobile complaint submission and tracking system for people complaining about product and services that routes the complaints to corresponding vendors (i.e. low quality products to bad roadwork and unsatisfying customer service).

The next Challenge Cup competition will be held in Berlin at Betahaus on November 13. London, Los Angeles, New York and Boston will follow at the end of November through December. Challenge Cup Global Partners include: U.S. Chamber of Commerce, District of Columbia, Pearson, TechCocktail, iStrategyLabs, Microsoft, and The Aspen Institute.

To be accepted, companies must be less than three years old, have less than $3M USD in revenue to date, have a scalable product or service already in the market, evidence some level of traction (active users, enterprise customers, or revenue), and have raised less than $1.5M USD in capital.
