In his latest blog post at http://www.PerWickstrom.com, Per Wickstrom is focusing on a critically important topic that is quickly becoming a major, potentially catastrophic problem across the country: the dangers of mixing drinks and alcohol.

“Many people believe that since alcohol is a depressant, that energy drinks and their high caffeine levels function as a kind of antidote,” commented Per Wickstrom. “However, that’s not how it works. Drunk is drunk, and the only thing more dangerous than someone who won’t stop drinking, is someone who won’t stop drinking yet believes that they’re sober.”

As Per Wickstom’s blog post highlights:

  • People tend to drink more when they mix energy drinks, since they can’t gauge their level of intoxication.
  • People who consumed energy drinks and alcohol were many times more likely to “binge drink” and sustain alcohol-related injuries.
  • People combining alcohol with energy drinks are more than four times more likely to want to drive themselves home – despite being well over the legal limit.
  • The side-effects of an alcohol-caffeine hangover are much worse than alcohol alone, and can even lead to hospitalization.

“As alarming as this growing problem is becoming, what is arguably most disconcerting is that binge drinking brought upon by combining alcohol and energy drinks can, according to a study by the CDC, be an indicator of the early stages of addiction,” added Per Wickstrom. “And once that takes hold, the problem grows exponentially worse for addicts, their family members, and everyone who they care about – and who cares about them. At that point, the only viable treatment approach is often inpatient care at an accredited facility.”
