Narconon Arrowhead Patient Speaks Out on Heroin Epidemic After Death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman
A former Narconon Arrowhead client speaks about the growing heroin problem, deaths from the drug and the sad and untimely death of actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
Canadian, Oklahoma (PRWEB) February 06, 2014
“Ellie”, a former heroin addict who wishes to protect her identity, after hearing of the death of famed actor Philip Seymour Hoffman said, “It’s sad when someone as talented as Mr. Hoffman dies before their time so senselessly. When I heard he had died with a needle in his arm I thought “my god” that could have been me 6 months ago.” Ellie recently completed the Narconon Arrowhead addiction treatment program located in southeastern Oklahoma.
Hoffman appears to be one of the latest fatalities from heroin possibly laced with Fentanyl; a powerful painkiller that experts say is 100 times stronger than morphine . Authorities found 70 packets of heroin in a search of Hoffman’s apartment. Many of the packets were stamped with the name Ace of Hearts or Ace of Spades . Similar brands of heroin has been responsible for a sudden increase in drug related deaths in New York and Pennsylvania recently .
“Heroin is a very popular drug of choice these days, there were probably a hundred or more addicts who also died somewhere in the states from a heroin overdose the same day Mr. Hoffman did that won’t get coverage in the press . Only their family and loved ones will have to deal with the pain of their loss. I am so thankful that Narconon was there for me. They have been helping heroin addict’s lead sober lives for almost 50 years,” stated the Narconon Arrowhead graduate.
The Ongoing Heroin Epidemic
Statistics compiled by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), indicate the number of people who abused or grew dependent on heroin more than doubled in 10 years, reaching 467,000 people by 2012. Those numbers coincide with similar trends for drug-induced deaths. The CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report declared in November that “deaths from drug overdose have increased sharply in the past decade,” claiming 40,393 people by 2010.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends better access to substance abuse treatment, stating that effective, accessible substance abuse treatment programs could reduce overdose among people struggling with dependence and addiction and they encourage states to increase access to these important programs.
