Fremont, California (PRWEB) March 04, 2014

The HERS Breast Cancer Foundation is proud to announce the expansion of its services to breast cancer survivors with the opening of a new store February 19, at the Stanford Cancer Center.

The Stanford Cancer Center empowers collaboration, fosters multidisciplinary research and accelerates the pace of new knowledge that can be translated into new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. This makes it a premier location for HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to support all women healing from breast cancer by providing post-surgical products and services regardless of financial status. The foundation is the only non-profit organization in the Bay Area that provides appropriate products, such as bras, prostheses and wigs, for breast cancer survivors in a safe, comfortable and understanding environment.

“Working with Stanford has been a dream come true," said Dr. Vera Packard, the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation's executive director. "We are so grateful that Stanford is allowing us to provide our support at its facility. We have had tremendous growth these past few years and are thrilled that expansion to the Stanford Cancer Center will enable us to serve even more women coping with breast cancer."

The HERS Breast Cancer Foundation Stanford Cancer Center store will serve clients with three programs:

  • Bras for Body & Soul®: The program provides a private, understanding environment for breast cancer survivors to be properly fitted for post-surgical garments, specialty mastectomy bras and prostheses.
  • We Support, You Survive: The purpose of this program is to provide free post-mastectomy garments to underserved women affected by breast cancer in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Lymphedema Project: This program provides the lymphedema garments for prevention and support of treatment of this condition as it occurs as a result of breast cancer treatment.

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation is accredited by the American Board for Certification (ABC) in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics. Such accreditation is mandatory for all organizations that supply durable medical equipment to Medicare patients. The ABC is an independent, not-for-profit agency that is itself accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.

Chris Hubbard, a 19-year breast cancer survivor who has created programs and services for several breast cancer-focused nonprofits, including American Cancer Society, will direct the Stanford store. She also has been a care consultant for Anita International, a manufacturer of post-mastectomy products.

“The process of opening a new program store at Stanford has been a few years in the works and we continued to realize how much this expansion would mean to both clients and staff members of HERS Breast Cancer Foundation,” said Karen Jackson, development director at the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation. “For us, growth is always good. In this case, it’s great because it opens the doors for more breast cancer survivors to get the support they need but can’t afford elsewhere. This is a huge milestone for the foundation, and, we hope, for clients we can serve at Stanford."

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1998 by a team of women motivated by their concern for women, the high incidence of breast cancer, and the lack of specific services for breast cancer survivors. HERS Breast Cancer Foundation hosts two annual events to raise funds to continue providing its services and bringing awareness to breast cancer and their mission. These events include People with Purpose Luncheon and KEEP Abreast Walk/Run. The organization also always welcomes generous donations or contributions.
