Walk to Cure Arthritis Comes to San Francisco
Arthritis Foundation Raises Funds for a Cure in the San Francisco Walk to Cure Arthritis
SAN FRANCISCO, April 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Help find a cure by participating in and fundraising for the 2014 Walk to Cure Arthritis on May 17 at the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse in San Francisco. Formerly Arthritis Walk, Walk to Cure Arthritis is the Arthritis Foundation’s signature, national fundraising event to prevent, control and cure the nation’s leading cause of disability.
The San Francisco Walk to Cure Arthritis will feature local honorees that will share inspirational stories about their individual battles with arthritis. This year’s honorees include youth honoree Katie Taves and medical honoree Dr. Imelda Balboni. Fifteen-year-old Taves was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) at the age of ten. Taves’ arthritis has spread from her knee to 27 joints, sometimes making everyday tasks challenging, however she continues to have a positive spirit and enjoys playing volleyball and cooking. Dr. Balboni uses state-of-the-art techniques in her research evaluating autoantibodies as biomarkers for rheumatic diseases like arthritis, and in 2007 battled her own arthritis to bike the California Coast Classic. She also sits on the board of directors for the Arthritis Foundation San Francisco Office.
Arthritis is a crippling disease that impacts more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children – or approximately 22 percent of the United States population. The disease costs the U.S. economy $128 billion dollars a year, and is a more frequent cause of activity limitation than heart disease, cancer or diabetes. Funds raised through the San Francisco Walk to Cure Arthritis will go toward programs, research and advocacy initiatives to help people today while finding a cure for tomorrow.
“Arthritis is costly, painful and debilitating, and makes a significant impact in the lives of people in your community,” says San Francisco Walk Chair Janice Neff. “By participating in and raising funds for San Francisco’s Walk to Cure Arthritis, you will help us reach our goal of raising $120,000 to remove the burden of arthritis entirely by bringing us closer to a cure.”
