Congressman Fattah to Address Neurotech Global Forum in Boston on Thursday

April 23, 2014

Fattah will also visit brain research centers at Boston University and MIT as part of his Neuroscience Initiative

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, will deliver the keynote address at the 2014 Neurotech Investing & Partnering Conference, this Thursday, April 24 in Boston, Massachusetts. Fattah will speak to more than 250 CEOs and business executives who are focused on developing treatments for brain and nervous system illnesses.

In its 9(th) year, the conference hosted by Neuroinsights convenes investors, executives, entrepreneurs, scientists and other stakeholders involved in developing new treatments and diagnostics for the brain and nervous systems. Fattah’s speech on Thursday will include an update on President Obama’s BRAIN Initiative, Fattah’s own efforts to bring together the European Union, Israel, and United States’ respective brain efforts, and his leadership working to increase private sector investment in brain research and technology.

Later, Fattah will visit two local research universities as part of his neuroscience efforts. First, Fattah will attend a briefing and site visit at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Brain and Cognitive Sciences Center. Then, Fattah will join researchers and administrators at Boston University for a tour of BU’s Autism Center of Excellence and an update on federally-funded neuroscience research efforts at the university, including their Center for Memory and Brain. The briefings with BU and MIT, respectively, represent Fattah’s fourth and fifth university site visits this year. Earlier in 2014, Fattah visited neuroscience labs and met with researchers at Columbia University, University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon as part of his work through the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative. Additionally, Thursday’s visit comes two years after neuroscience meetings in Boston where the Congressman announced he would work to attract more interest in neuroscience research among pharmaceutical companies and increase the number of industry-academic collaborations.

Since its founding in 2011, the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative has worked to achieve groundbreaking progress in understanding the human brain. Through FNI and his role as Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS), Fattah has fought for increased federal funding for neuroscience as a means of discovering breakthrough treatments and cures for brain related diseases and disorders, including stroke, autism, Alzheimer’s, and other dementias. FNI is also focused on creating partnerships and collaborations, both within the United States and abroad, to expand the scope of research, tools, support, and funding dedicated to the study of the human brain.
