Thousands of Tampa Residents Rally Public Support to Help End One of the World’s Most Mysterious and Devastating Diseases
America’s largest lupus walk program raises funds for lupus research and education programs in the Tampa area
TAMPA, Fla., May 5, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Thousands of Tampa residents who are living with the disease lupus, and their families and friends, joined the Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now(TM) event, which raised more than $130,000 in donations. Money raised will help fund lupus research and education programs, increase awareness of the devastating autoimmune disease, and rally public support for those who suffer from its brutal impact. The Tampa event is part of America’s largest lupus walk program, which is conducted each year by the Lupus Foundation of America and its national network of chapters, offices and support groups.
Lupus ravages different parts of the body. It is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with and a challenge to treat. Lupus is a cruel mystery because it is hidden from view and undefined, has a range of symptoms, strikes without warning, and has no known cause and no known cure. According to a recent independent survey released by the Lupus Foundation of America, 72 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 have either not heard about lupus at all or know little or nothing about the disease beyond the name. The statistic is particularly troubling because this is the age group at greatest risk for the disease, and it emphasizes why Walk to End Lupus Now events are so crucial to raising awareness of lupus.
“I am truly inspired by the 2,000 people who came out to support us and the money we were able to raise to cure this cruel mystery,” said Elle Kincaid, top fundraiser from the Orlando area and the event’s speaker. “It is so incredibly emotional to see the amazing group of people who support all of us and how much they truly want to make a difference. The walk brings me hope that one day we will raise enough awareness and money to find a cure and give us all better days!”
Fox 13′s Anjuli Lohn was the guest emcee for the event, which was crowded with people wearing the Lupus Foundation of America’s signature color of purple. The next local Tampa event is an education program that will take place in late September 2014.
