In his latest blog post at http://www.perwickstrom.com, entrepreneur, author, speaker and drug treatment facility CEO Per Wickstrom is providing advice on how to avoid self-pity and the victim mindset.

“There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging that, sometimes, life throws us a curveball we can’t hit – or even a brush-back pitch that sends us ducking and diving for cover,” commented Per Wickstrom, who blogs regularly on self-development, health, wellness and business topics. “However, there’s a line that, once crossed, turns self-compassion into self-pity; and with that, comes a whole new dynamic that works against an individual rather than for them.”

According to Per Wickstrom, the keys to avoid self-pity and the victim mindset include:

  • Take ownership of the situation. The fact that the problems might be completely someone else’s fault is beside the point. Until an individuals takes ownership of the situation, they cannot begin to try and move beyond it.
  • Be honest. Sometimes, well-meaning friends can actually make things worse by preventing an individual from seeing their role – however indirect – in a bad situation.
  • Laugh! Laughter not only has remarkably positive psychological and even physiological effects, but it can help open up new possibilities and options that would otherwise remain hidden.
  • Exercise per a doctor’s approval. Sometimes, even a gentle walk can lead to profound, transformative change.
  • Focus on productive activities, such as work or volunteer efforts. The mind responds to GIGO: “garbage in, garbage out.” Focusing on making a contribution and/or helping others can turn a vicious cycle into a virtuous one.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol. Now more than ever, the last thing an individual wants is to develop a dependency or a behavioral link between stressful situations and drugs or alcohol – it’s a crutch that quickly grows into abuse and addiction.
  • Help others. This can be done through volunteering with a local organization, or simply checking up on elderly neighbors and offering to lend a hand.
