May 31st Marks the Fifth Anniversary of Dr. George Tiller’s Assassination: A Man Who Provided Care to Thousands of Women around the World
WICHITA, Kan., May 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — As we look back on the last five years, we are once again struck by Dr. George Tiller’s deep commitment to serving women. We will never truly understand Dr. Tiller’s impact, but we can look at the thousands of women who he helped as a small measure of his lasting legacy.
“South Wind Women’s Center is honored to be caring for women in the same community where Dr. Tiller practiced for decades,” stated Julie Burkhart, CEO and Founder of Trust Women and South Wind Women’s Center, “On April 3, 2013, South Wind Women’s Center opened in the very building, that had been shuttered for almost four years, where Dr. Tiller worked for so many years.”
“Unfortunately, five years later, physicians who provide abortion care must remain vigilant of the threat of violence by extremists,” said Burkhart, “Security for our doctors, staff, and patients remains a major concern. We continue to be reminded that for abortion to remain accessible; there must be the physicians who are willing to step forward.”
“Additionally, over the past five years, access to abortion services has markedly decreased. One of the other major reasons for this decline are the numerous laws passed in states that have shut down clinics and limited women’s access to remaining clinics,” continued Burkhart, “Since 2011, states have passed more laws to restrict access to abortion than they had passed in the previous 10 years combined.”
“In the face of adversity, we will continue to provide abortion care to the patients of Kansas and surrounding areas,” state Burkhart, “The way we honor Dr. George Tiller’s life is by persevering and ensuring that women have the health care they need. For every problem, there is a solution.”
