Holistic health and wellness center, Heartwood, based in Evanston, hosted renowned meditation instructor and social activist Lopon Jann Jackson for a Four Foundations of Mindfulness Program on May 16-18. Lopon Jann Jackson has been a meditation instructor since 1975, teaching Buddhist studies and practices, as she was also a student of Her Eminence Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche since 1994 and many other teachers, including the Dalai Lama. However, the meditation program was not the only reason Heartwood hosted her in their wellness space.
In conjunction with the mission of Heartwood to promote health and wellbeing, Jackson is also a social activitist, with a special focus on helping disadvantaged women. Her background includes 14 years as the Associate Director for the House of Ruth, a nationally acclaimed domestic violence program in Maryland. She was also serving as Executive Director of Advocates for Children and Youth, a statewide child advocacy organization, for 11 years. Currently, she is serving the needs of disadvantaged families nationwide as a Senior Fellow at The Annie E. Casey Foundation.
“We were so blessed to have had Lopon Jann Jackson, with us this weekend so eloquently sharing her teachings,” stated Laura Dorfman, a participant of the Program. “It was an honor to have her offer herself so selflessly and with such compassion. Thank you to all who worked, participated, and planned this wondrous weekend.”
Jackson’s Four Foundations of Mindfulness program launches the beginning of Heartwood hosting nationally and internationally known teachers in the area of holistic healthcare. The program laid the groundwork for Khandro Rinpoche’s upcoming visit to Heartwood on August 16 and 17. Rinpoche is one of the most renowned Tibetan teachers currently teaching in the West and is visiting from India to teach a program called “The Four Immeasurables.”
Jackson’s visit had a special resonance with Nancy Floy, President and Owner of Heartwood. She launched both of Heartwood’s affiliates: a not-for-profit organization called the Women and Cancer Program, which provides free holistic healthcare for women in financial need, and Tsogyaling, a small, community-based meditation center offering classes and programs at Heartwood.
Heartwood is a holistic health services center committed to providing excellence in care to Evanston and the greater Chicagoland area. It features newly renovated offices for integrative healthcare practitioners, a classroom for teachers, an event space, and a conference room.
