Brooklyn Pediatrician Shares How to Reduce Seasonal Allergy Risks in Babies
Dr. Michael Gabriel, a leading Brooklyn pediatrician, reveals how exposure to dust mite extract can significantly decrease the risk of seasonal allergies in babies.
BOHEMIA, N.Y., June 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Dr. Michael Gabriel of GPM Pediatrics, a Brooklyn pediatrics center, responds to an article that explains how dust mite extract exposure to babies can decrease their chances of developing allergies, and may even help prevent asthma and eczema.
According to the article, “Doctors discover dust mite extract can significantly reduce allergy risk in babies” published by Medical News Today on June 13(th), “Although dust mites are an important cause of asthma and allergy, using the same allergen in an oral extract form, known as immunotherapy, can reduce the body’s reaction to not only dust mites, but also other important allergens.” This new discovery could lead to a new way to prevent these diseases in children.
In a study conducted by researchers at NIHR Southampton Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit, 111 children whose parents both had allergies were studied. They administered half the study oral drops of dust mite allergen and half a placebo. They were given this treatment twice a day from six-month-old to eighteen-month-old babies. It was concluded that the exposure to the allergen, found in pillows, mattresses, and on carpets reduce the incidence of allergy by nearly 63%.
Brooklyn pediatrician Dr. Michael Gabriel suggests that parents keep this discovery in mind for their young children. “One in four people are affected by an allergic diseases, which start early in life.” Gabriel explains, “It’s important to be aware of measures that can be taken to reduce this risk. Allergies often lead to asthma, so any measures taken to prevent allergies are very important.”
