Back in July, Dr. Anita Milici from Matarazzo & Milici Group promoted the importance of oral health to the Philadelphia residents who participated in the Navy Yard 5K

PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Aug. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — The Matarazzo and Milici Dental Group want Philadelphia area residents to understand how oral hygiene can be good not just for patients’ teeth, but for their overall health. To do that, Dr. Milici stationed a table at the 5k to provide educational material and oral hygiene products to runners.

Why is oral hygiene and health so important? Well, the American Dental Association found that 90% of whole-body disease has oral evidence tied to it. Poor oral health brings a risk of other total body diseases such as:

    -- Diabetes
    -- Leukemia
    -- Oral cancer
    -- Pancreatic cancer
    -- Lung disease
    -- Kidney disease
    -- Stroke

In the state of Pennsylvania, a status report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that from 2006 to 2008 (most up-to-date statistic) the percentage had dropped for adults 18 years and older who visited the dentist within a year’s time. Annually visiting a dental practice is the best strategy to decrease the risk of gum disease.

As a periodontal dental group in Philadelphia, Drs. Milici and Matarazzo don’t want to see that percentage take a turn for the worse. The Navy Yard 5k is one of the many efforts of Matarazzo & Milici Group to educate the Philadelphia community about the importance of oral health and hygiene, even at-home oral health maintenance is a strategy they encourage patients to focus on.
