Shand Morahan & Co., an insurance underwriting company, and Avreco, an independent insurance wholesaler, have announced a partnership in a new risk management program aimed at Midwest hospitals.

The Heartland HealthcareHospital Program (3HP) will offer Midwest community hospitals with fewer than 150 beds comprehensive professional liability insurance that includes a risk management component called Emmi, created by Emmi Solutions. It will provide access to web-based interactive programs that help hospitals reduce claims and promote patient safety.

Shand will provide the new Heartland Healthcare Hospital program with affordable, claims-made insurance coverage with limits of $1 million/$3 million per location, and a $5,000 minimum deductible. Companion coverage is also available, including staff physicians, errors and omissions and long-term care. Shand Morahan will contribute 2% to each participating hospital to offset the cost of the Emmi programs.

Sarah Dore, senior vice president healthcare at Avreco, said: “Risk management is about communication and behavior and Emmi enhances that. There are a lot of risk management tools out there, but they don’t get to the heart of the matter – making patients a part of the team, a part of the process. Emmi will help these community hospitals prepare their patients and make them a better-informed consumer.”
