Most people think of donating food around the holiday time, but the summer months often get overlooked for a variety of reasons—thus making these months some of the most important for food pantries. Understanding this need, Dr. Bryne Willey of AlignLife of Springfield, a local chiropractic & natural health care center, wanted to heighten awareness of the need in the summer months. Their clinic hosted its first annual Thanksgiving in July food drive to collect non-perishable foods for Fifth Street Renaissance, a local not-for profit agency that offers services from homeless services to feeding the needy, as well as youth and family support services. To learn more about Fifth Street Renaissance, visit them at their website at http://www.fsr-sara.org. "When we sat down with them and identified a dire need for non-perishable foods, we asked what they do when they don’t have enough food. Their response of having to turn families away was unacceptable to us, and at that point we committed to changing that scenario in the biggest way we were able to,” said Dr. Willey.

The end result of the food drive was a collection of 565 canned goods that patients, friends, and families donated to the cause. In the process of spreading awareness for the drive, the Levi, Ray, and Shoup Foundation also chose to support the Fifth Street Renaissance with a $5000 donation to support their food pantry efforts. To accomplish two of AlignLife’s goals, feeding the needy and educating the community on natural health care, Dr. Willey donated over $4000 in services to those who brought in two bags of non-perishable food items. AlignLife is planning for a coat drive this fall and toy drive for the holiday season to benefit local charities.
