Put some butter in it: The science behind a great cup of coffee, part 3

Christopher Pilny for - Your Universe Online

In the final part of this three-part series (Part 1 & Part 2), we sit down with Bulletproof CEO Dave Asprey to discuss one of the more unique philosophies in his coffee creed: Blend in some grass-fed butter.

While this editor can't attest to this process, one of our writers has done it and claims, "When I put the butter in my coffee, my insides felt lubricated."

I, personally, can attest to Bulletproof Coffee, though. Out of many brands I've had over the last decade (and I've had a lot; Nashville is kind of coffee central), Dave's beans were absolutely delicious, and definitely in my top three.

But I digress.

Let's hear what he has to say about all this blended, grass-fed butter

Bulletproof Coffee – with Brain Octane C8 MCT Oil and grass-fed butter blended in - gives you a complete lack of hunger and food cravings for hours, all day energy and sharp focus, without the crash and jitters typically associated with a cheap cup of coffee.  It promotes all day energy boosting and fat burning as well, by helping your body be in ketosis when following the Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting protocol.

Putting butter in hot drinks is a several thousand-year-old practice I learned while traveling at high elevation in Tibet. Bulletproof Coffee takes this practice to a new level by blending together coffee made from low toxin coffee beans with grass-fed butter and Brain Octane, which is coconut oil extract 18 times stronger than coconut oil.  By providing your body with satiating fat from butter, and a special kind of energy from fat comes from Brain Octane, instead of sugar and carbs, you are helping your body to use ketones (fat burning) for energy throughout the day.

It's possible to enter ketosis by eating a diet that's very low in carbohydrates with moderate protein and high healthy fats, but it's hard to get there and stay there. Bulletproof Coffee hacks ketosis by using the shortest one of the four possible medium-chain triglyceride oils (C8), which makes it easier for your body to use fat for energy instead of sugar. In one study, simply adding 2 tablespoons to the diets of healthy young men resulted in 9 percent of their brain metabolism being powered by ketones, even when the men were eating carbohydrates! Normally, you have zero brain metabolism powered by ketones after you've eaten carbohydrates. In other words, using this specific extract of coconut oil instead of just plain coconut oil provides a much easier path to burning fat and to create energy in a different way.

Most people achieve ketosis by strictly avoiding carbs, and that works, but you can get a low level of ketones when you have Bulletproof Coffee in the morning. Bulletproof Coffee on an empty stomach is a fast path to burning fat the same way as ketosis and brings the benefits of mental focus and reduced food cravings. With plain coconut oil and a low-carb diet, you'd need to very carefully restrict carbs for at least 3 days to reach the same level of ketosis.
