Joe Lynch, executive director of the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, has been given the state emergency services office’s highest award.

Lynch, director of the ambulance authority since 1989, received the West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services Annual “Sam W. Channell” Memorial Award for Emergency Medical Services this month, county officials announced on Friday. The award is given to people who dedicate their lives to the emergency services profession.

Lynch began volunteering with the East Bank Volunteer Fire Department in the 1970s. He has been a paramedic, emergency medical technician, EMT supervisor and a flight medic with the state’s first aerial medical services program.

Under his leadership, the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority has gone from 10 ambulance stations to 14 stations running as many as 30 ambulances, and from 63 to 200 full-time employees.
