Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c74113) has announced the addition of Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease to their offering.

This book is designed to follow the patients journey from diagnosis through to end of life and include the role each member of the multidisciplinary team has. It will review the pathophysiology of the respiratory system and the impact on the rest of the body. The types of diagnostic tests used to determine the patients diagnosis will be discussed. It will look at the psychosocial impact this disease has on both the individual and their family/carers. The management of COPD at home and in hospital; including drug treatments, oxygen therapy, and non-invasive ventilation will be discussed. Pulmonary rehabilitation has been shown to be an effective way of improving quality of life for individuals and this programme will be explained. As smoking is the main cause of COPD this addiction will be looked at and strategies to help people stop will be given, as well as the benefits of stopping for patients with COPD. When to begin to introduce the subject of death and dying with patients and their families and how to deal with the distressing symptoms a patient may experience will be discussed. Finally the book will include a look at what the future is for patients with COPD. At the end of each chapter there will be learning activities for the reader to undertake within their particular field. Interspersed in the book will be vignettes of patients experiences of living with COPD.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is increasing rapidly worldwide and it's predicted that by 2020 it will represent the third leading cause of death. Sadly, this slow-progressing debilitating disease not only affects the individual but also has consequences for the family. More positively, the urgent need to improve the care offered and to raise the public profile of the condition has now been recognised. Healthcare providers play a central role in this, through health education, early diagnosis and better management through all stages of the disease.

Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease provides an insight into this debilitative condition. The book aims to develop nurses' and allied health professionals' knowledge and skills in caring for individuals with COPD. It takes the reader on a journey from diagnosis through to end-of-life care and examines

-- Initial diagnosis and symptom management

-- Smoking cessation

-- Pulmonary rehabilitation

-- The management of acute episodes

-- The role of each member of the multi-disciplinary team

-- Quality of life, including nutrition, fatigue management and leisure activities

-- The future for the care and management of people with the condition.

Healthcare professionals from multi-disciplinary teams have contributed to this book to demonstrate that a co-ordinated approach for these patients is required across both primary and secondary care. Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease can be utilised by nurses and allied health professionals caring for patients at all stages of their disease.
