Programs to Reduce Health Care Disparities Among Racial, Ethnic Minorities Recognized By NCQA

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), with support from The California Endowment, has recognized nine managed care plans for programs that reduce health care disparities.

"The exemplary efforts of these plans to promote cultural competence and eliminate health disparities go a long way toward a higher quality and more just health care system," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane.

"Health care providers must be cognizant of their responsibility to provide care that is responsive to the needs of the diverse communities they serve," said Robert K. Ross, M.D., president and CEO of The California Endowment.

Winners of the "Recognizing Innovation in Multicultural Health Care Award" are:

Aetna Life Insurance Company and its HMO Affiliates for increasing mammography rates within their African American and Hispanic/Latina membership.

CIGNA for facilitating cultural provider matches for Hispanics/Latinos and African Americans seeking behavioral health care.

Chinese Community Health Plan (San Francisco) for improving diabetes care.

Excellus Health Plan (New York) for decreasing NICU admission rates among African American teens.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire) for improving colorectal cancer screening rates among racial/ethnic groups.

Health Alliance Plan (Michigan) for reducing disparities in breast cancer screening rates for African Americans.

Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., for a translation infrastructure and a centralized repository of translated terms and information.

UnitedHealthcare for an Asian language provider directory with ethnic backgrounds and language abilities of providers and staff, and for adding Asian providers.

UPMC for You (Pennsylvania) for improving birth outcomes for African American members.
