Northern Ontario Woman Charged in Abduction of Newborn Denied Bail

SUDBURY, Ont. - A 29-year-old mother charged with abducting a day-old baby from a northern Ontario hospital two weeks ago must remain behind bars after she was denied bail Tuesday.

Berk Keaney, the woman's lawyer, says he plans to appeal the decision and is hopeful the appeal with be heard in Superior Court within the next two weeks.

The bail hearing began in a Sudbury, Ont., court on Nov. 8, but a justice of the peace delayed a decision, saying she needed more time to consider all she had heard.

The newborn's disappearance on Nov. 1 prompted an Amber Alert and a frantic search for the missing girl after surveillance video showed a woman in hospital garb walking down a corridor, a blanket-swaddled bundle in her arms.

The missing baby was found unharmed several hours later in the town of Kirkland Lake, a five-hour drive north of Sudbury.

Brenda Batisse is charged with kidnapping and endangering the life or health of a child.

Batisse, who already has two children, aged six and eight, was nine months pregnant prior to the abduction and due to give birth several days later.

Speculation about a miscarriage has been rampant, but police have not yet said what happened to that pregnancy.
