It Mightn’t Be His Fault

It is easy to understand Craig Shepherd’s feelings (Letters, Nov 8) over Wayne Muir’s complaint about delays in his diabetes- related treatment at Wellington Hospital.

It would be easier to agree that Mr Muir should take personal responsibility for his excess weight and diabetes were it not for the possibility that his condition might have been exacerbated by his following current advice from health authorities.

Until the Heart Foundation, Health Ministry and even diabetic clinics stop recommending high glycaemic food choices, the blame for the incidence of diabetes and the deterioration in the condition in those with diabetes lies squarely with the advisers, not patients. KEVIN BATEMAN
