Rotary Welcomes Tangier Advocates: The Rotary Club of West Point Hopes to Join in the Efforts to Serve Tangier Island.

November 22, 2007

By Daily Press, Newport News, Va.

Nov. 22–The Rotary Club of West Point welcomed David B. Nichols and James N. Carter, Jr. as speakers at their Nov. 8 meeting.

Nichols has been flying to Virginia’s Tangier Island once a week for 27 years to care for more than 600 isolated residents.

Carter is the Chairman of the Tangier Island Health Foundation.

The foundation is a nonprofit, community-based organization, committed to serving Tangier Island with emergency and preventative health care services.

The organization is raising funds to replace the existing 50-year-old clinic with a state-of-the-art medical clinic.

The goal of the foundation is to expand on the dedication exemplified by Nichols, a physician and pilot who has loaded boats, planes and helicopters with supplies and staff, and conducted weekly medical clinics for the people of Tangier.

Nichols and Carter hope to replace the aging Gladstone Memorial Health Center with a new clinic capable of delivering modern medicine.

They plan on carrying out this mission through the application of approved medical practices, high ethical standards and sound financial management.

The Rotary Club of West Point plans to join with other clubs in the area to support this humanitarian project.

The public can also help support this cause by mailing a check payable to the Tangier Island Health Foundation, P.O. Box 788 Irvington, VA 22480.

Want to help fund the clinic? You can send your check to:
