CHICAGO, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Women's Health Foundation (WHF) announced today the receipt of grant funding for three innovative programs in the area of women's pelvic health and fitness from the Community Memorial Foundation, Retirement Research Foundation (RRF) and Pfizer, Inc. The non-profit Women's Health Foundation was founded to heighten awareness and educate women about pelvic health as well as co-sponsor related research. "We are honored to receive these grants from organizations that have the vision to help us fulfill our mission to support women of all ages and ethnic background in achieving pelvic wellness," said WHF Founder Missy Lavender.
Community Memorial Foundation is supporting "Take Control Suburban Chicago!" a partnership with three suburban Chicago YMCAs in Downers Grove, LaGrange Park and Berwyn. The grant will be used to promote WHF's groundbreaking Total Control(TM) fitness and educational program for women to members of the southwestern YMCAs and area residents. Using the proceeds, WHF will underwrite the training of Total Control(TM) instructors from each YMCA, produce appropriately targeted marketing materials and offer three interactive health and educational events for women of all ages.
Retirement Research Foundation has funded a program development and pilot research grant for the adaptation of Total Control(TM) toward older, active adult women. WHF is collaborating with Dr. Sheila Dugan, a physiatrist at Rush University Medical Center and WHF Board member, who will be the Principal Investigator of the research study and The Altenheim, an independent living facility in a suburb of Chicago, host of the pilot program who will help source participants. The study will be looking at the impact of the program on symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, including incontinence, as well as overall mobility, functionality and flexibility of the participants after a twice weekly, six-week class.
WHF has also received grants from Pfizer, Inc. for the development of programs targeting cancer patients and survivors: "Below The Belt," an educational forum for under-served women dealing with pelvic health issues such as ovarian cancer and incontinence and "Breast Cancer & Art Expression," a body art exhibit for breast cancer survivors. By partnering with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Southern New Jersey and a New York based group of body artists and gallery owners, WHF is looking to bring pelvic health and fitness education to women battling cancer, many of whom experience incontinence following chemotherapy, radiation or from on-going drug therapy.
