N.S. Hospital Grappling With Wait Times That Exceed National Standard

HALIFAX - Officials at Nova Scotia's largest hospital are trying to reduce surgical wait times that far exceed the national standard.
Doctors at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre say a new strategy might help deal with more than 5,000 people who are awaiting surgery - 60 per cent of whom are waiting longer than the national standard.
The bulk of those are orthopedic patients.
More than 11,000 people are also stuck in a backlog, awaiting surgical consultations.
Dr. Jaap Bonjer, chief of surgery for the Capital District health Authority, says a plan to use other medical facilities through the province, create a common wait list, and shorten hospital stays could reduce wait times.
Bonjer says some surgical wait times have already been reduced, but others might face further delays as the province grapples with a nursing shortage.
