Jewish Festival of Lights Begins Tuesday
By Colette M. Jenkins, The Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio
Dec. 1–The annual Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah, begins at sundown Tuesday.
Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Maccabees, the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days.
It is observed in Jewish households by the kindling of lights on the menorah on each of the festival’s nights.
The area public observance, which includes the lighting of the menorah, is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Center Court at Summit Mall, 3265 W. Market St., Fairlawn.
This year’s Hanukkah at the Mall celebration will feature music by the Community Children’s Choir and the Lippman Middle School band. Latkes, gelt and a chocolate menorah will also be part of the celebration.
The event is a project of Chabad of Akron/Canton and Anshe Sfard (Revere Road) Synagogue. It is sponsored by Stan Aronson & Associates.
This year’s theme is “A Hanukkah Night to Remember.”
