After the anthrax attacks of fall 2001, Congress made the single largest investment in state and local public health capacities since the Second World War. With the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Century Foundation's Working Group on Bioterrorism Preparedness has studied how these funds have been used. What has been done well? What gaps remain? What should be done in the future?
In the project's final report, "Breathing Easier? The Report of The Century Foundation Working Group on Bioterrorism Preparedness" a group of leading public health policy experts and practitioners recommend establishing national standards, bolstering the public health workforce, and building a public health system that can respond both to deliberate attacks and to daily threats to health. As concerns about terrorism, budget priorities, and containment of infectious diseases persist, this report is especially timely.
