J.D. Power and Associates Reports: Hackensack University Medical Center Recognized for Providing Outstanding Inpatient and Cardiovascular Experiences
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ — Hackensack University Medical Center, a 781-bed teaching and research hospital affiliated with The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey — New Jersey Medical School in Hackensack, N.J., has been recognized for service excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program(SM). Hackensack has been recognized for providing its patients with “An Outstanding Cardiovascular Experience” in the first year the program was offered, as well as for providing its patients with “An Outstanding Inpatient Experience” for a fifth year.

“Because patients place a high value on the service aspects of their hospital stay, providing them with a consistent, positive experience year after year is as important for hospitals as it is for any other service industry,” said David Stefan, executive director of the healthcare division at J.D. The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying a random sample of recently discharged patients of Hackensack University Medical Center on their perceptions of their hospital stay. Patient feedback was then compared with the national benchmark established by the J.D. Power and Associates National Hospital Service Performance Study(SM).
The telephone-based research conducted among patients focuses on the five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall hospital experience that were established in the national study: dignity and respect; speed and efficiency; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support.
Hackensack University Medical Center exceeds the national benchmark study scores for overall inpatient satisfaction and cardiovascular satisfaction. In comparison to the national study, the hospital performs particularly well in both of these lines of service in the speed and efficiency with which the staff delivered care to their patients. The medical center also receives high ratings in the areas of availability of the doctor and the speed and efficiency of personnel conducting tests and treatments.
Hackensack also performs well in maintaining inpatient comfort, particularly with the nurses’ concern about controlling pain and with food served. Cardiovascular patients give high ratings on the emotional support provided by the hospital, particularly in their confidence and trust in the doctor’s skill level and the nurses’ willingness to address questions and concerns.
Patients were asked to rate their level of trust and confidence in the hospital after their visit. Four in five cardiovascular patients and nearly three in four inpatients indicate they have more or much more confidence in the hospital after their most recent visit. Furthermore, overall trust and confidence in the hospital is considerably higher among Hackensack inpatients and cardiovascular patients, compared with the national average.
Non-government acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition for inpatient, emergency department, outpatient, and maternity services. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may reapply for this recognition.
