Ugandan gov't takes measures to offer better mental health services

KAMPALA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan government is taking new measures to offer better services to its countrymen who suffer from mental health related problems, reported local press on Tuesday.

Minister of State for Health Mike Mukula was quoted as saying that under the Health Sector Strategic Plan Project One, the government is constructing six new mental health units at Kabale, Fort Portal, Hoima, Soroti districts and Gulu and Arua hospitals. It also plans to construct seven mental health units in Mubende, Jinja, Mbale, Masaka, Moroto, Lira and Mbarara districts.

He said the seven health centers would supplement the six new mental health units being constructed.

"Other health units are being rehabilitated and would offer some mental health outreach services," Mukula said.

The project will cost 48.17 million US dollars. Among them, the government contributed 4.65 million dollars while remaining are from a loan from the African Development Fund, according to the minister.

Nearly 6 million Ugandans suffer from mental health related problems and majority of the people with mental illnesses in the country are youths.
