SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ — Terry Thomas Fulmer, the Erline Perkins McGriff Professor and dean of the College of Nursing at New York University, has been elected to the Skidmore College board of trustees.

A 1976 graduate of Skidmore, she is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and also holds fellow status in the New York Academy of Medicine. Fulmer was the first nurse to serve as president of the Gerontological Society of America, and also the first nurse to be elected to the board of the American Geriatrics Society.

“With her boundless energy and concern for the well-being of others, Terry Fulmer is a wonderful representative of the many nursing graduates that Skidmore has produced over the years,” said Suzanne Corbet Thomas ’62, board chair. “Particularly as Skidmore charts the expansion of its programs in the sciences, the college will be well-served by her long experience and leadership in health care and education.”

In addition to publishing over 150 papers and textbooks on the subject of geriatric care, Fulmer has served on many key panels and received numerous honors for her effort to improve nursing care, especially when it comes to the elderly. Two of her nine books have received American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Awards.

Under her leadership at NYU, Fulmer has been credited with a 25 percent increase in enrollment at the NYU College of Nursing. Her academic research and scholarship has led to a process for screening and detecting abuse of the elderly and she has received funding from the National Institute on Aging for this work. Fulmer has been an active Skidmore alumna, serving as secretary of the Alumni Board in the early 1980s and on the Friends of the President Committee in the 1990s. She is currently class fund chair and a member of the Alumni Awards Committee.

A trustee of the New York Academy of Medicine, Fulmer received both her master’s and doctoral degrees from Boston College, and her Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Post Master’s Certificate from New York University. She also completed a Brookdale National Fellowship.

Fulmer lives in Westchester with her husband, Keith, and their three children, Nina, Holly, and Sam.
