The University of New Mexico College of Nursing has received a five-year, $4.8 million grant to establish a health policy concentration in the nursing Ph.D. program.

The grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will support student scholarships and research. A college-based health policy curriculum will include courses, seminars and collaborations with the Center for Health Policy, which Robert Wood Johnson Foundation established at UNM last year with an $18.5 million grant.

The foundation said it wants to find ways to bring nurses into health policy discussions and decision-making to take advantage of what it called the nurses’ “bond with patients and their link to quality of care.”

The College of Nursing said that because of its efforts to recruit a diverse student population it can create nursing scholars who can represent underserved communities in health policy development.
