California Pharmacists Association Supports Bold Leadership By Governor and Speaker in Moving Health Care Reform Forward

Posted on: Tuesday, 18 December 2007, 00:00 CST

With the passing of the health care reform bill presented to the State Assembly today, the California Pharmacists Association applauds the efforts of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Speaker Fabian Nunez for working collaboratively to move health care reform forward for Californians.

"Pharmacists are fully aware of the many problems encountered by the uninsured in California and recognize the crucial need to fix our broken health care system now," said Lynn Rolston, Chief Executive Officer for the California Pharmacists Association. "They are on the front lines and witness, daily, people in need of life-saving medications who cannot afford them. The proposed reform is a move in the right direction to helping Californians in need."

The Governor's and Speaker's latest proposal includes crucial provisions that will:

Ensure access to health coverage, including individuals with pre-existing conditions

Increase affordability

Address chronic conditions by providing broad access to preventive care, for diabetes, obesity, smoking and other chronic conditions, by enacting the "Healthy Actions" programs

Promote prevention, wellness and personal responsibility

Many groups have worked tirelessly to help produce this practical compromise, and moving forward we will assure the inclusion of these important provisions. We are hopeful that health care reform will become a reality in California soon.

The California Pharmacists Association will continue working on behalf of the pharmacy benefit as well as working with the California Chronic Care Coalition (CCCC) on behalf of some of California's most needy patients.

The California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) is the largest state pharmacy association in the nation and the professional society representing all pharmacists in California. The mission of the Association is to act as the leader in advocating the role of the pharmacist as an essential provider of health care and to support pharmacists in providing optimal pharmaceutical care.
