National Business Coalition on Health Issues Report on Health Plan Diabetes Performance

Posted on: Tuesday, 18 December 2007, 12:00 CST

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Business Coalition on Health (NBCH), a non-profit organization of employer-based health coalitions, today released the first national report on health plan diabetes performance designed specifically to support employer purchasing strategies. The report uses data from the eValue8(TM) Request for Information (RFI) to examine current health plan performance on diabetes care, and illustrates how employers can leverage health plan services to help their employees with diabetes while improving care and controlling costs. Developed with support from sanofi-aventis, the Health Plan Diabetes Care Performance Report is publicly available and can be accessed at: http://nbch.org/documents/diabetesreport.pdf.

eValue8 is the nation's leading standardized RFI tool used by employers and coalitions to gather health care data from nearly 200 health plans and health insurers to compare the quality and efficiency of America's health plans. Over 100 million Americans, or one in every three Americans, are members of health plans that respond to eValue8. The report uses data and information from 98 plans verified by NBCH member coalition scoring staff.

More than 20.8 million people in the U.S. have diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes and since the 1980s the prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. has more than doubled and is expected to reach 39 million by 2050.

"Employers increasingly recognize the impact of diabetes on the health and productivity of their workforce and there is growing evidence that effective management of diabetes reduces complications, reduces health care costs, and protects employee productivity," said Andrew Webber, president and CEO of NBCH.

Report findings of employer purchaser expectations of health plans include:

-- Work with them to develop worksite programs, identify patients at risk, and reach out to high risk patients.

-- Engage patients in self-management and preventive health behaviors.

-- Screen diabetic patients for comorbidities (other health conditions that exist at the same time as the primary condition in the same patient such as hypertension) and complications.

-- Coordinate services for patients with multiple conditions.

-- Provide actionable information to physicians to help them identify and manage diabetic patients effectively.

-- Reduce barriers to essential medications such as those for diabetes. -- Help patients understand their medications and take them appropriately.

Through ongoing improvements, health plans are applying data, information and expertise to support physicians and patients in effectively managing diabetes and reducing the complications of the disease. Employers are encouraged to work with local coalitions for plan-specific eValue8 information that can be used to assess activities of health plan vendors and maximize the value of health benefits.
