CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) has elected Chris L. Pashos, Ph.D., as President for 2008-2009. With more than 3,600 members in 90 countries worldwide, ISPOR is a scientific and educational organization that promotes the science of health economics and outcomes research, and the effective use of this research to help ensure fair and efficient use of health care budgets.

ISPOR's members evaluate the use of medicines and other health care products, and their clinical, economic, and health-related quality of life outcomes. Members include researchers, policy makers and healthcare providers, and are trained in disciplines such as medicine, pharmacy, economics, statistics, and nursing.

"No matter where we live around the world, we must make tough policy decisions on how to reduce the burden of disease with limited financial resources," observed Pashos. "To inform those decisions, we must accurately and in a timely manner measure the benefits and costs of medicines and medical devices."

"Our challenge as researchers is to continually improve research methods and available data, to use the most appropriate research techniques, and to share findings transparently. We must always work to promote the scientific rigor and validity of our work, while remembering that its value increases when results are presented in ways that meet the needs of skeptical audiences. Inasmuch as our findings influence important decisions in business and government, we must continue to provide trustworthy information to policy makers, the medical community, the press and the public, all who use and depend on this information."

Currently vice president at Abt Associates, Dr. Pashos created and leads its Health Economic Research & Quality of Life Evaluation Services practice, which collaborates internationally with clinicians, researchers and policymakers to assess the use, outcomes, and value of medicines and medical devices. Prior to joining Abt Associates in 1995, Dr. Pashos was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, where he managed the Harvard Heart Attack Patient Outcomes Research Team, funded by the United States government to study the quality of cardiac care.

Dr. Pashos is a recipient of the ISPOR Distinguished Service Award, and has chaired the ISPOR Institutional Council and various Society committees and work groups. Having lived in North America and Europe and worked around the world, Dr. Pashos has published in leading medical journals; lectured on the quality, cost, and value of healthcare; and consulted to numerous industry, governmental, and academic clients. His research, most notable in cardiovascular disease, cancer and women's health, has resulted in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications; more than 150 presentations, book chapters, and reports; and input to UNICEF, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Surgeon General, Congress, and others.

Dr. Pashos holds a Ph.D. and M.P.P. in Public Policy from Harvard University and a B.S. from the United States Naval Academy.
