Posted on: Thursday, 13 January 2005, 18:00 CST

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Seven of the nation's leading food and nutrition science organizations today commended the release of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The Food and Nutrition Science Alliance (FANSA), a partnership of seven professional food and nutrition societies, the American College of Nutrition, the American Dietetic Association, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, the Institute of Food Technologists and the Society for Nutrition Education, jointly applauded release of the Guidelines as a significant step in enhancing science-based nutrition policy to serve as a foundation for public understanding.

FANSA praised the government for these guidelines that are based on a rigorous evidence-based review of science. The scientific societies, noting that most of the Advisory Committee members that conducted the are nationally recognized nutritional scientists with extensive training and outstanding research expressed particular satisfaction that the Guidelines represent a distillation of the best science available on the important nutrition and health issues facing Americans.

FANSA also noted that the Committee based its recommendations on the most current scientific consensus best dietary health and weight maintenance strategy -- one that balances enjoying nutrient-rich foods appropriate physical activity, rather than singling out specific foods.

FANSA reiterated its support for full federal funding of the research recommendations contained in the Committee report. The scientific societies emphasized that further research needs must be met so evidence-based reviews of the science can be continued on an ongoing basis. This will ensure that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans can be further improved in coming years.

FANSA looks forward to working with DHHS and USDA, both in supporting the evidence-based reviews of nutrition science that led to this year's Dietary Guidelines for Americans and in implementing the recommendations themselves.
