What: The Association for Ethics in Spine Surgery was started last year as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the ethical practice of spinal surgery. Today, AESS has almost 200 spine surgeon members and a five member board of directors that author our newsletters.

Why: Recently, Senator Grassley (Rep. Iowa) has launched an investigation into the medical device industry, including looking into substantial financial ties between the device industry and practicing physicians. Jack Mitchell will be addressing how this investigation is expected to impact Spinal and Neurological surgeons, as well as the spinal device industry. With so many questions about the Association and the Senate investigations, this promises to be an informative event.

The Association for Ethics in Spine Surgery was started by Dr. Charles Rosen, Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at University of California at Irvine Medical Center. The Association is dedicated to furthering the ethical practice of spine surgery by promoting unbiased patient care, clinical and evidence based medicine. The AESS believes that the physician’s role both legally and morally is to place the care and well being of patients above all else, and to ensure that our relationship with industry is independent financially of our patient care. It is the Association’s mission to continually promote public policy that ensures neither industry nor physicians place profits above patients.
