Get the Skinny on Fitness
Jen Logan, exercise physiologist at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, has this advice for people who take up a new exercise program in the new year:
Check with a health care practitioner before radically adjusting or reviving your exercise routine.
Be wary of injuries if you haven’t been doing anything and suddenly start a regular regime.
New equipment is a great way to get people in the door of a gym, but there is a lot that you can do at home on your own.
Get expert advice on proper form when you start a new type of exercise.
Changing the intensity or type of workout will change your metabolism. That can change your requirements for water, different types of food and more.
For those who exercise at home, videotapes, DVDs and books can motivate and guide your approach to exercise.
Make a commitment. A lot of people quit before they see a benefit, but body changes may have begun internally before they are visible.
Water workouts are great for people with arthritis.
