American Public Health Association Congratulates Michael Leavitt on His Confirmation As New Health and Human Services Secretary

Posted on: Wednesday, 26 January 2005, 15:00 CST

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following is a statement from Georges C. Benjamin, MD, FACP, American Public Health Association executive director:

"We greet today's news of the Senate confirmation of Michael O. Leavitt as Department of Health and Human Services secretary with great anticipation. We view this as an opportunity to further highlight public health issues of importance to Americans across the spectrum, including rising prescription drug costs, the plight of uninsured Americans and health disparities.

"Secretary Leavitt carries a wealth of leadership skills that will enable him to tackle the myriad of obstacles facing our public health infrastructure. As former Utah governor and, most recently, Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Secretary Leavitt understands the scope of public health challenges. His experience will play an integral role in how he approaches opportunities to improve the nation's health.

"Secretary Leavitt has an established track record on public health issues. During his tenure as Utah governor, the state's heart disease deaths, teen smoking rates, infant mortality rates, breast cancer deaths and teen pregnancy rates all declined. At the time he left office, the United Health Foundation ranked Utah as the fourth healthiest state in 2002.

"The American Public Health Association looks forward to working with Secretary Leavitt to improve the health of Americans. We understand the mammoth responsibility that he faces, and we support him as he begins to consider policy decisions that will affect millions."
