MedStar Health Chooses Cerner Solutions to Drive Superior Clinical Outcomes
MedStar Health, the largest health system in the Baltimore/Washington region, will be implementing multiple Cerner Millennium® solutions at all seven of its hospitals. This healthcare information technology (HIT) implementation will help clinicians to deliver world-class service to the more than 147,000 inpatient and one-and-a-half million outpatient visitors MedStar Health sees each year.
“With the high volume of patients we treat on a daily basis, information technology plays a critical role in the care delivery process,” said Catherine Szenczy, MedStar Health chief information officer. “We believe the Cerner Millennium solutions will enable us to raise the bar on the care we deliver by improving the workflow of clinicians, and supporting MedStar’s focus on delivering high quality patient care.”
The Cerner Millennium PathNet®, PharmNet®, PowerChart® and MillenniumPOC™ solutions are replacing the health system’s existing HIT products. After evaluating offerings from multiple vendors, MedStar leadership chose to implement Cerner solutions because they wanted to move away from a multi-vendor best-of-breed approach to the unified Cerner Millennium system. The Cerner Millennium architecture is an HIT computing platform that helps health professionals elevate safety, quality and efficiency. To date, Cerner has more than 7,700 live Millennium applications at more than 1,100 facilities worldwide.
The Cerner Millennium solutions will allow MedStar Health to consolidate and standardize its operations, increasing efficiency and enhancing patient safety. MedStar Health will be using Cerner Millennium solutions to automate clinician documentation, pharmacy and laboratory operations, medication administration processes, and bedside care activities. MedStar’s continued focus on providing world-class care has earned five of its hospitals the designation of “America’s Best Hospitals,” bestowed by U.S. News & World Report’s 2007 hospital rankings.
“MedStar’s implementation of multiple Cerner Millennium solutions to achieve a more cohesive healthcare information technology strategy supports its vision of utilizing technology to advance healthcare delivery,” said Trace Devanny, Cerner president. “These solutions will help improve patient safety and clinician workflow at several junctures in the care process, including quick access to patient records, management of medication dispensing, administration processes, and automation of laboratory practices.”
All together with its more than 6,000 clients worldwide, Cerner is putting a system in healthcare, advancing the practice of clinical medicine and finding entrepreneurial ways to deliver value to clients. Cerner continues to push boundaries by ushering in a new generation of intelligent medical devices, broadening its client community around the globe, leveraging clinical and pharmaceutical data for new discoveries, and collaborating with employers to address administrative friction.
