TORONTO - A Toronto judge has denied bail for a 16-year-old girl charged in the fatal New Year's Day stabbing of teenager Stefanie Rengel.

Ontario Superior Court Justice David McCombs made the decision Wednesday in a Toronto courtroom. The girl's parents showed little emotion as McCombs delivered his ruling, but her 10-year-old brother erupted into tears, later seeking solace in the arms of her lawyer.

A court officer handed the girl a tissue after the verdict came down.

"I see (the accused) is in some distress," McCombs said. "I'm not surprised."

Rengel, 14, was the daughter of two Toronto police officers. She was stabbed to death and left to die in a snowbank a few metres from her east end home. None of her family members were in the courtroom.

A teenager, who has just turned 18, was also arrested. He and the girl are each facing a charge of first-degree murder.
