TOWN planners should give pedestrians and cyclists the highest priority to encourage more people to stay active, experts said yesterd ay.
Workplaces should be linked to walking and cycling networks, they said. The guidelines, from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, are designed to bring together recommendations for the NHS, local authorities, planners, builders, designers and architects.
Professor Mike Kelly, director of Nice’s centre for public health excellence, said people needed safe environments for walking and cycling.
He added: “Physical activity is such an important part of our armoury of health promotion and disease prevention.
