Olde Mill-Millersville: Church to Present Lenten Series

Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church will present its “Why Catholic” Lenten series journey through the Catechism program from Feb. 3 through March 9.

People interested in attending may sign up to attend sessions after Mass on Sunday through the first week of class.

The kick-off talk will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday with a discussion on the sacraments. Additional programs will include a Valentine’s Mass at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 followed by dinner and a dance to celebrate the sacrament of matrimony, a talk on the sacraments of healing from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 19, a presentation called “Living Christianity in Today’s Society” at 7 p.m. from Feb. 25 to 27 and a talk on Holy Orders from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on March 4.

In other church news:

The youth ministry will host a basket bingo fundraiser at 7 p.m. on Feb. 1. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

The cost is $18 in advance and $21 at the door. There will be 20 games, two specials and two raffles.

Proceeds will be used to support the youth programs, including retreats, sacramental preparation, social events, outreach to the poor and the middle school ministry called the Edge.

In addition to attending the event, community and church members may assist the ministry by sponsoring a basket that will be given away as a prize. Baskets range from $30 to $200 each.

Interested persons may send a check made payable to Our Lady of the Fields, 1070 Cecil Ave., Millersville, MD 21108, attention to the Youth Ministry office. Each basket has a theme such as movies, bath time or fun in the garden. Interested persons may stop by the youth ministry office to fill a basket or drop off donations. Gift certificates will be accepted for door prizes or bake sale items to be sold at the event.

Recreation program

The county Department of Recreation and Parks will offer recreation programs for the special needs community next month. Programs are held at the Ruth Parker Eason School.

A Teen Club for youth with development delays will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Fridays beginning Feb. 1. Youth ages 13 to 21 will gather with peers for dancing, games and social time activities. The eight-week program costs $60.

A Saturday recreation program will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Feb. 2. Youth will be encouraged to develop social skills, play adaptive sports, create arts and crafts and get involved in other activities.

Parents must provide lunch for their child. The program is open to students ages 6 to 16. Participants will meet for eight weeks. The cost is $128.

A beginner swim program for the disabled will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Feb. 19 for children ages 3 to 6. The class for students ages 6 to 12 will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Feb. 21.

A swim and exercise class for the mentally and physically challenged adult will be held from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Feb. 19 and 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Thursdays beginning Feb. 21.

The swim programs are open to youth and adults with various disabilities. Parents or caregivers must be available to be in the pool the first night during the assessment. The 10-week program costs $85.

SAT answer class

Old Mill High School students are invited to participate in a SAT answer class from 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 13 and 14.

The class is designed to prepare students for the SAT exam.

There will be a full diagnostic exam, analysis and scoring of the SAT, review of major sections, strategies and tips and a take-home review packet. The cost is $129.
