MANY Malaysians aspiring to become doctors or dentists fail to realise their dreams as there are insufficient places available for pursuing such competitive programmes.

At the Management & Science University (MSU), you will find alternative career opportunities in medicine through the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences (FHLS), Bachelor in Biomedicine (Hons) programme.

The term “biomedicine” refers to the study of normal life processes in humans and it provides an understanding of the causes and consequences of human disease.

The Bachelor in Biomedicine is a three-year Bachelor programme which includes classroom instruction and a clinical component. Initial subjects like anatomy, physiology, genetics, pathology microbiology, pharmacology give an insight into the human body and human illnesses.

In the final year, there is hospital-based training where the students are exposed to applied clinical science. Upon completing the programme, job opportunities exist in medical research pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic laboratories, biotechnology laboratories and hospitals.

Openings exist in forensics, veterinary medicine, food manufacturing, medical publishing and many others.

Those interested in teaching can have a career in colleges and universities. The biomedicine programme also helps students in working closely with physicians in providing a wide variety of healthcare services.

For those who are still keen on a medical programme, this course can be a good foundation for medicine. Graduates of MSU’s FHLS may also pursue their professional qualification in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy through MSU’s International Students Exchange Programme unit (ISEP).

Through this unit, students have the option of several universities in Indonesia, Eastern Europe, South Africa and India, namely Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Andalas, Universitas Sumatera Utara, University of Indonesia, Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Hasanuddin, M.S Ramaiah Medical College, Medical University of Warsaw, Charles University Prague, University of Cape Town and Jagiellonian University, Krakow which cater for medical, dentistry and pharmacy programmes.

The standard of medical courses at these universities is also at par with other medical degrees offered elsewhere. Apart from the Bachelor in Biomedicine (Hons), the FHLS MSU also offers the Bachelor in Bioinformatics (Hons), Bachelor in Bachelor in Medical Sciences (Hons), Bachelor in Pharmacy (Hons) and the Bachelor in Food Service Technology (Hons).

The entry requirements to MSU Bachelor programmes through FHLS are a pass in SPM or SPMV with credits in Bahasa Malaysia and minimum grade C in two subjects including General Paper and D passes in two subjects in STPM.

Students with KPM matriculation certificate, A-Level, foundation and other qualifications recognised by the MSU Senate are invited to apply for the Bachelor programmes.

SPM leavers who wish to pursue the FHLS Bachelor programmes can get a headstart with MSU Foundation in Biological Science/Health Science or MSU Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.

The entry requirement to these programmes are minimum credits in five subjects including Bahasa Malaysia, mathematics and a science subject.

Apart from the FHLS, MSU also offers science and technology programmes through the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE), Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP), Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS), Center for Flexible Learning (CFL) and the Graduate Management Centre (GMC).
