Chinese-Made Dumplings Cause Food Poisoning in Japan

Posted on: Wednesday, 30 January 2008, 18:00 CST

Tokyo -- Ten people in Japan suffered food poisoning symptoms and were hospitalized Wednesday after eating Chinese-made frozen dumplings, leading their importer, JT Foods Co., to recall 23 types of frozen food products.

The prefectural police of Chiba, near Tokyo, and Hyogo, western Japan, inspected dumplings imported by the subsidiary of Japan Tobacco Inc. and detected a organophosphorous pesticide called methamidophos in the packages.

The health ministry immediately instructed quarantine offices not to admit imports of the same frozen dumplings, which, according to JT, were manufactured in China's Hebei Province.

In Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, a mother and four children were hospitalized because they developed diarrhea and stomach ache after eating the dumplings. A mother and a daughter in Chiba and three people in Takasago, Hyogo Prefecture, were also hospitalized because of stomachache and nausea caused by the dumplings.END
