BioCentury and Nature Publishing Group Launch Inaugural Issue of SciBX(TM)

Posted on: Monday, 4 February 2008, 09:01 CST

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) and BioCentury Publications, Inc. today announced the Inaugural Edition of SciBX: Science-Business eXchange, a highly anticipated weekly publication that identifies and evaluates new developments in science and technology that have commercial and investment potential within the biotechnology and pharmaceutical arena.

The Inaugural Edition of SciBX clearly demonstrates how the scientific acumen of NPG and the business intelligence of BioCentury have combined to put new science into the business context. This week's issue describes how University of North Carolina research may point the way for Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALXN) and privately held Trillium Therapeutics Inc. to extend their antibodies from blood cancers into solid tumors and provide new competition for advanced melanoma compounds in the clinic.

SciBX's science-business approach is exemplified by a pathway map showing the players and clinical programs affected by this new finding.

In addition, the Inaugural Edition of SciBx identifies:

-- How the efficacy of cancer vaccines could be boosted by a University of Pennsylvania discovery of a target on cancer cells that enables tumors to evade the immune system. -- How triangulating gene association studies helped Genmab A/S (OMX: GEN) build the rationale for its HuMax-TAC antibody in autoimmune disorders. -- How a Northwestern University team has improved the speed of Sanger sequencing by almost three-fold, a boon to the academic research space.

This in-depth coverage is accompanied by SciBX's unique "Distillery," compiling the week's most important publications affecting biopharma development. "This Week in Therapeutics" highlights ways to predict metastases with microRNAs; potential markers for cardiovascular disease; melanin-concentrating hormone antagonists for treating obesity; and more. "This Week in Techniques" describes particle-based fabrication of high-density peptide arrays; high-speed, single-channel electrophoresis-based DNA sequencing on a chip; a mouse model for identifying morphine analogs; and more.

To create the Inaugural Edition, the independent SciBX editorial and research team read and evaluated hundreds of scientific papers that are published each week in the most frequently cited journals within the fields of biotechnology, life sciences and chemistry. This team, under the direction of Karen Bernstein, Ph.D., Co-Founder, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of BioCentury, then conducted the in-depth reporting and analysis to elucidate the business context of the findings and identify the next steps required to transform these developments into commercial and patient value.

"The Inaugural Edition demonstrates how SciBX will be the bridge between cutting edge scientific institutions and their partners in the biopharma industry," said Peter Collins, Publishing Director of NPG. "Our team has drilled down through hundreds of new science reports to find the high impact research that the biopharma industry needs to develop new medicines."

The Inaugural Edition is available without charge to readers through the SciBX website, www.scibx.com.

"Every week, SciBX will map how the latest science could affect the progress of hundreds of companies developing new drugs and their partners," noted David Flores, Co-Founder, President and CEO of BioCentury. "Anyone who invests in the biopharma space cannot afford to miss the coverage of these companies and their competitors."
