HYDERABAD: Two schizophrenics, Chote Mian (35) and Mohammad Asif (27), escaped from the Institute of Mental Health, Erragadda, on Saturday.

According to hospital superintendent Dr M Gowri Devi, “The incident happened between 4 am and 5 am. They broke their shackles, which were chained to a gate. After scaling the compound wall with the help of a water pipe, they jumped and ran away,” she told ‘STOI’.

Though there were four ward boys on duty at that time, they failed to notice the escape.

Complaints have been lodged with police stations of Karimnagar, Warangal as well as Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar and at the same time a team from the hospital is searching for the duo.

Chote Mian, a native of Warangal, was admitted to the institute in Nov 2007. The hospital subsequently decided to discharge him and sent letters to his parents who did not respond to them.

Mohammad Asif hailing from Karimnagar was admitted in January, 2008, though he recovered, was waiting to be discharged.

“We have asked police to hand over Chote Mian, if found, to his relatives as he has already been discharged. However, Asif, who has not yet completed the observation period of one month, has to be brought back to the hospital,” the

authorities said. Incidentally, Asif was one among the 11 men who escaped from the hospital two years ago.
