Feb. 5–Shawnee Mission Medical Center said Monday that it intends to buy 42 acres in south Overland Park for a hospital of up to 400 beds.

The project, which is at least two years from construction, includes 240,000 square feet of medical office space. Financial details were not disclosed.

The land, bounded by 159th Street, 167th Street, Antioch Road and U.S. 69, is part of the 300-acre Village of Overland Park community being developed by the Price Brothers real estate firm. The development will include a retail center, offices, a hotel and residences.

“As our community grows, our goal is to continue providing services to meet the expanded health care needs of our patients in convenient locations close to their homes,” said Samuel H. Turner Sr., Shawnee Mission president and CEO.

A few miles from the Price Brothers site, Carondelet Health in 2006 bought a four-year option to purchase a 72-acre tract at the northeast corner of 179th Street and U.S. 69.

Fleury Yelvington, Carondelet’s president and CEO, said Monday that Carondelet had yet to make firm plans for the site.

Carondelet includes St. Joseph Medical Center in south Kansas City and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs.

Shawnee Mission also is building a 79,000-square foot outpatient center and medical office building at Kansas 7 and Prairie Star Parkway in Lenexa. That facility, valued at about $16 million, is scheduled to open around the middle of this year. Long-term plans call for a hospital of up to 400 beds at the site.

Shawnee Mission is scheduled to complete a $109 million expansion of its 383-bed main campus in Merriam late this year.
