Heart Disease Overtakes Cancer As Number One Killer of Women in U.S.; Nearly Half of Female Heart Attack Victims Will Die

Posted on: Wednesday, 2 February 2005, 09:00 CST

News Advisory:

The following is a satellite newsfeed advisory. The contact listed can provide additional information to print and broadcast media.

STORY SUMMARY:

The numbers are grim and the lack of awareness staggering. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. Eight million American women have heart disease and more than 400,000 women will have heart attacks this year. Of those heart attack victims, nearly half will die- almost double the rate for men. February is National Heart Month and doctors are hoping to raise awareness about this deadly disease.

One reason for the lack of knowledge about women's heart disease is education. For instance, many people don't know that heart attack symptoms for women are different than for men. Instead of the crushing chest pain that men can feel, women's symptoms include pressure in the chest, neck or jaw, light headaches, nausea, fatigue and shortness of breath.

Early detection is key but so is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease has the following recommendations.

-- Aim for a healthy weight

-- Be physically active every day

-- Choose a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains

-- Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables daily

-- Choose a diet that is low in saturated fat and moderate in total fat

-- Moderate your sugar and salt intake by choosing food and beverages wisely

Doctors say women often wait too long to get the care they need. For more information on preventing heart disease in women, go to www.womenheart.org or www.cigna.com/heart.
