(HealthDay News) – Even as adults, taking your medicine and staying on it may take more than a spoon full of sugar. When it comes to some medicines such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, it represents a lifelong commitment.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says you need to understand what you are taking and why. Be sure to ask your doctor:

What you are being treated for and how each medicine helps.

About the side effects of any medications you are taking.

How your medicine interacts with your other medications and the foods you eat.

What to do if you miss a dose or have problems with side effects. It is important that you keep your doctor informed of how the medicine is working for you.
