DIET COACH: How Can I Lose Weight Without Exercise?
Posted on: Monday, 7 February 2005, 09:00 CST
Q I REALLY haven't got time to exercise but I must lose weight. Is it still possible? TINA, Dudley
A THE short answer is yes - but at a price, Tina! There's a very simple equation for weight loss that only a brave person would disagree with - if you eat less and do more, you should lose weight.
So if you choose to lose weight by paying attention to only one side of the equation - by eating less - you should lose weight even without doing more exercise.
Now comes the bad news. It would be good to reach a healthy weight. Of course it would. But good health is more than simply being the right weight.
If that was all that was necessary, slim people wouldn't bother to exercise.
Good health is more than just being slim. It includes having a healthy heart and lungs, healthy bones, sufficient sunlight (without over-exposure), a healthy diet, no smoking, no excessive drinking and a whole lot more.
If you decide to live on a chocolate bar a day, you'll lose weight. But you would be seriously undernourished, lacking protein, vitamins and minerals and energy.
If you have no exercise, your mood might be deflated and your heart and lungs would not be working at their best.
So pay some attention to both sides of the equation. Eat a well- balanced diet (lowering processed sugar and poor fats) and at the same time focus on getting more exercise.
Now what about the time factor? Every now and then I find myself on the London Underground and each time I'm taken aback by how many people ignore the chance for some good exercise.
I would estimate that only one in 10 people on the escalators takes the opportunity of walking up instead of being carried up. The same is true of shopping malls.
What a waste! Here are a few other opportunities.
It's much quicker to park your car in the first available parking space at the supermarket and walk a little further than to crawl round more crowded parts to find the nearest spot.
Another approach is to work out how you can do things at the same time as exercising. Can you spend quality time with your children and exercise at the same time, together with them?
Can you read at the same time as sitting on an exercise bicycle?
Just a few ideas, Tina. I hope you'll be able to come up with your own.
