Wales Leads UK in Clinical Cancer Trials

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 February 2005, 09:00 CST

The Wales Cancer Institute has opened a new chapter in Wales' illustrious record on cancer research, bringing the cutting-edge work of the laboratory to the thousands of patients suffering from the disease. But although Wales is at the forefront of cancer research, the nation lags woefully behind the rest of the developed world in the cancer league tables. Professor Alex Markham.: The risks of developing cancer:Every year more than 14,000 people in Wales will be diagnosed with cancer. The disease will kill 8,000 people; The overall risk of developing cancer is now one in three, although the risk increases with age; Wales has the second worst incidence of all types of cancer, excluding skin cancer, in women in Europe - Denmark has the highest number of cases of cancer per population; The three most common cancers for men in Wales are - lung, prostate and colon cancer. For women it is breast, lung and colon cancer.: FROM PAGE 31: Five easy steps to health:Cancer Research UK's five-point Reduce the Risk advice is as much about preventing cancer as it is about preventing other common diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes: 1 Stop Smoking - stopping smoking or never smoking is the single most effective thing anyone can do. 2 Stay in Shape - half-an-hour of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, gardening or swimming, can help maintain health.

3 Eat and Drink Healthily - a healthy, balanced diet, rich in fruit and vegetables and low in fat and sugar, is a common sense message for health, and that includes sticking to the recommended drinking levels.

4 Be SunSmart - protect yourself from the sun and harmful UV rays. Keep a close eye on changes to moles.

5 Look After Number One - know what is normal for your body and seek medical advice if you notice changes. Attend screening programmes. For more information about the Reduce the Risk campaign, visit www.cancerresearchuk.org.
