Boy Bitter at Theft of Prized Bike

Posted on: Wednesday, 9 February 2005, 15:00 CST

MITCHELL FALCONER'S dream bike, with its flame paint job and ape hanger handlebars, was too tempting for thieves.

The 11-year-old New Plymouth boy rode the distinctive bike, which he had only had for a month, to the Ngamotu Road Dairy on Friday night, with his brother, to buy some lollies.

"Some kids (outside the dairy) questioned him about the bike, `Can we have a ride', and of course he said `No'," his mother, Christine Falconer, said.

There were no bike stands at the dairy and Mitchell, who was only going in for a moment, did not consider locking the Bronx-brand bike, she said.

"They waited til he turned his back and him being so young and naive he didn't think he should be a bit more careful."

The Devon Intermediate student spent four weeks before Christmas working for the Belt Rd Motor Camp ironing pillow cases -- at 35c a pillow case -- to save most of the the money needed to buy the $300 bike.

"He saved his money, went to Auckland and bought it there. He's so upset, he's so gutted over losing it and we so want it back."

Mitchell had been careful with the bike.

"He wouldn't even take it to school because he was scared it would be stolen.

"He's been riding his old bike to school and keeping this just for using at the weekend or after school."

Mitchell said he bought the black painted bike because it looked cool and now he was angry it had been stolen.

The theft had been reported to the police and the family was hopeful of getting the bike back.

Mrs Falconer said the bike was unusual and probably the only one of its kind in New Plymouth.

"We put a reward notice in the dairy and kids have been ringing in, it's been seen in the Herekawe Drive area several times.

"The last sighting we got was Sunday night, but of course by the time we get there nobody's there or nobody wants to give us a name or address, which is what we want."

Anyone with information about the theft should contact New Plymouth police.
